As the Police ramp up operational activities in light of the approaching Christmas season, the Narcotics Police are warning would-be drug traffickers to desist, as the team will continue to enforce all provisions of the Dangerous Drugs Act and other laws in support of the Force’s mission to keep the people of Jamaica safe.
The announcement comes even as the team reveals that in one instance, the Narcotics Division and the Canine Division, with support from the Contraband Enforcement Team of Jamaica Customs, conducted anti-narcotics at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston. During checks of passengers on a flight destined for Barbados and Antigua, 10 persons were arrested and approximately 118 pounds of ganja worth J$472,000.00 were seized.
Those arrested were subsequently charged with various breaches of the Dangerous Drugs Act, including:
· Possession of ganja;
· Dealing in ganja;
· Taking steps preparatory to export ganja and
· Conspiracy to export ganja.
The cases are ongoing.
As international travel is expected to increase over the festive season, continuous anti-narcotics operations will continue at our international airports and persons are beong reminded to obey the law regarding drugs and other prohibited substances.
