The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) confirms that one of its members perished in a vehicular crash on Church Road in Linstead, St. Catherine on Monday, October 25.
The officer – Constable Orlando Irons – who was assigned to the St. James Division, was among a team of officers transporting Kevin Smith, the St. James Pastor who was arrested following the death of two members of his congregation on Monday, October 18.
Reports are that about 9:30 a.m., Constable Irons was traveling in an unmarked Police vehicle with two other officers and Kevin Smith, when the vehicle crashed.
Another police team that was travelling in a separate vehicle with another suspect from the same St. James incident alerted other police teams for assistance.
On arrival of the lawmen, Irons, the injured officers and Kevin Smith were taken to hospitals where Irons and Smith were pronounced dead while two officers were admitted in serious condition.
The suspect – Kevin Smith – was being transported from St. James to the Major Investigations Division in Kingston to be formally charged with several offences to include Murder and Illegal Possession of Firearm and Ammunition.
He was set to appear in the Home Circuit Court this week, following the Director of Public Prosecution’s issuing of a voluntary bill of indictment in the matter.
