CLARENDON WOMAN ISSUED HEFTY FINE FOR SOCIAL MEDIA MISUSE

In a ruling at the St Catherine Parish Court, which underscores the consequences of social media misuse, Dhana Warren, a Clarendon resident, was yesterday fined JM$900,000 or four months imprisonment for the offence Use of Computer Device for Malicious Communication.

Warren was charged on Thursday, January 23, after posting a video inciting violence following the fatal shooting of Othneil Lobban, otherwise called ‘Thickman’.  She had pleaded guilty to the charges on April 24, 2025.

Head of Forensic Services, an amalgamation of the JCF’s Technical Services Division and the Communication Forensics and Cybercrime Division; Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Christopher Brown believes this conviction will send a strong message to citizens to be mindful of their social media use.

“This conviction serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of responsible social media use. The ruling sends a clear message to individuals who believe they can disseminate harmful content with impunity online,” said Brown. “It highlights that freedom of expression does not extend to inciting violence, making threats, or disturbing the peace, especially when using digital platforms,” he added.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) reminds citizens that their partnership remains crucial in the fight against crime and urges citizens to play their part in maintaining the safety and security of communities.
