SUMMER SAFETY TIPS COURTESY OF THE JCF

As we enjoy the holiday season, it is important that we all take simple steps to stay safe. Whether at home, on the road, or online—your safety is our priority. Please take a moment to read these important tips to help protect you and your loved ones.

1.      Stay in Touch

Children should always inform parents, guardian or a trusted adult of their whereabouts and who they are with.

2.      Know the Signs of ‘Stranger Danger’

Teach children never to accept rides, gifts, or invitations from strangers.

3.      Supervise Outdoor Activities

Ensure children are always in the company of a trusted adult when playing outside, especially near water or open spaces.

4.       Hydrate and Protect from the Sun

Encourage drinking plenty of water and wearing hats and sunscreen to prevent dehydration and sunburn.

5.      Practice Road Safety

Remind children to use sidewalks, cross at pedestrian crossings, and follow traffic signals when walking or biking.

6.      Monitor Screen Time

Balance indoor entertainment with educational or physical activities. Excessive screen use can lead to isolation or online risks.

7.      Secure the Home

Keep sharp tools, flammable items, and chemicals locked away. Safety at home is just as important as safety outside.

8.      Be Cautious with Fireworks

Fireworks are not for children. Put away anything that may cause a fire in the house.

  1. Teach Emergency Numbers

Ensure your child knows how to dial 119 and other important contact numbers in case of an emergency.

10.  Limit Unsupervised Time

Whenever possible, avoid leaving children home alone. Arrange for responsible supervision.

  1. Stay Alert Online

Talk to children about online dangers. Monitor their devices and discourage contact with unknown individuals.

  1. Engage in Meaningful Activities

Involve your child in summer camps, church groups, or community events to build skills and stay active.

  1. Secure Your Home When Traveling

If leaving town, let a trusted neighbor know. Lock all doors and windows, and avoid posting travel plans online.

  1. Avoid Leaving Children Alone in Vehicles

Even for a short time—cars can heat up quickly and become dangerous.
  1. Stay Alert in Public Spaces

Protect wallets, phones, and bags in crowded areas like markets, festivals, or bus parks. Do no walk and use gadgets. Especially in crowded areas.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force encourages every citizen—young and old—to stay alert, act responsibly, and look out for one another. Together, we can ensure that this summer is not only fun-filled but safe for all.
