TAXI OPERATOR SENTENCED FOR 2018 SEXUAL ASSAULT
A taxi operator who was charged in 2018 by detectives from the Centre for Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse (CISOCA) has been convicted of Forcible Abduction and Rape.
The accused has been identified as Kacheif Gilbert of Lawrence Tavern, St. Andrew.
On January 28, 2018, Gilbert invited a woman to a party in his community. While at the party, the woman went to Gilbert’s vehicle to retrieve her bag, indicating she was not ready to leave; Gilbert forcibly pushed her into the car and drove to an undisclosed location, where he proceeded to assault her sexually.
Following the incident, a report was made to the police, and an investigation was launched.
Gilbert was convicted on November 20, 2024, for the crimes, and on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, he appeared before the court for sentencing, where he received a sentence of four years and seven months imprisonment for Forcible Abduction and 15 years imprisonment for Rape. The sentences are ordered to run concurrently.
Head of CISOCA, Superintendent Kerry-Ann Bailey, said, “CISOCA thoroughly investigates all reports of sexual offences, and we are committed to bringing perpetrators to justice.” She continued, “Support and resources are available to persons who have been impacted by sexual violence and child abuse, and we are encouraging victims to come forward and make a report.”
