Jamaica has seen a substantial decline in major crimes during the second quarter of 2024.
During his recent Quarterly Press Conference, Police Commissioner Dr Kevin Blake, announced a nearly 12% overall decrease in major crimes since the start of the year compared to the same period in 2023.
Dr Blake highlighted the reduction across several key categories: “Notably, murders have decreased by 14.5% as at July 15, 2024. Shootings are down almost 2%, robberies have decreased by 15%, rape has seen a significant drop of 32%, and break-ins are down by 6%.”
The Commissioner also underscored the increased success in seizing illegal firearms, which are often linked to violent crimes. “As at June 30, 2024, we recorded a 14% increase in gun seizures over the same period last year, taking 422 illegal firearms off the streets and out of our communities, mainly pistols,” Dr Blake stated.
This decline in major crimes and the increased recovery of illegal firearms reflect the ongoing efforts of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) to enhance public safety and reduce violence across the nation. The JCF continues to implement strategic measures and intelligence-led operations to combat crime effectively.
Dr Blake reiterated the JCF’s commitment to maintaining this downward trend and called on the public to support the police in their efforts to make Jamaica a safer place.
