Jamaica’s SWAT Teams Show Grit as They Head to International Competition

Two teams from the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) are set to represent the nation at the elite SWAT Roundup International Competition in Orlando, Florida, from November 2–7, demonstrating resilience and resolve in the face of adversity.

The delegation, led by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Howard Chambers, departs Jamaica just days after the island was battered by Hurricane Melissa, a powerful Category 5 storm that left a trail of destruction across several parishes.

Despite widespread damage and personal loss among some of the competitors, the teams have pressed ahead, determined to honour their commitment to represent Jamaica on the international stage.

ACP Chambers said the team’s decision to compete speaks volumes about their discipline and devotion to duty. “Many of our members were personally affected by the storm. Yet, when we met as a team, there was no hesitation. The consensus was clear; we would not cancel this duty. If anything, the challenges we have faced have only strengthened our resolve. We are even more driven to represent Jamaica at this time,” he said.

The teams were initially scheduled to depart on October 31, but their departure was delayed due to their involvement in relief operations and the temporary closure of the nation’s airports.

ACP Chambers noted that the teams’ participation this year is as much about resilience as it is about performance. “Last year, Jamaica delivered its best-ever performance at SWAT Roundup, finishing with results that made the entire Force proud. This year, our aim is to go even further—to be sharper, stronger, and to outperform ourselves,” he said.

The annual competition attracts law enforcement and tactical units from across the world, testing skills in marksmanship, tactical problem-solving, endurance, and teamwork. Jamaica

will be represented by units from both the Specialised Operations Branch and the Department of Weapons and Tactical Training (DWTT).

ACP Chambers added a rallying call for Jamaicans to lend their support to the delegation. “We invite all Jamaicans, especially those in Florida and the wider diaspora, to come out and support their teams. When we stand together, we stand taller. The men and women of these teams are carrying the flag with pride and purpose,” he said.

As the JCF continues its recovery efforts at home, the participation of its SWAT teams on the international stage stands as a powerful symbol of the organisation’s commitment, courage, and continuity, even amid the toughest circumstances.
