Commissioner of Police, Dr. Kevin Blake, addressed the media today in his first quarterly press briefing since assuming office, highlighting the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s (JCF) unwavering commitment to maintaining safety and security across the island.
During the briefing, Commissioner Blake unveiled the encouraging statistics reflecting a notable decline in numerous major crime categories during the first quarter of 2024. As of Friday, March 31, compared to the same period last year, the data revealed a substantial decrease in murders and rape by 13% and 38% respectively, signalling a positive trend in public safety.
Furthermore, the total number of shootings saw a decline of 4%, showcasing the effectiveness of the JCF’s targeted interventions. While robbery cases remained unchanged at 171 incidents, break-ins experienced a notable decrease of 17%, reflecting the success of collaborative efforts in crime prevention.
Commissioner Blake underscored the intensified efforts of the JCF in combating gun-related crimes. “Our efforts to ensure safety and security across Jamaica are ongoing and evolving, and it is crucial that we examine the data with a discerning eye to understand the landscape of crime in our nation and the effectiveness of our strategies to combat it,” he said.
Notably, there has been a 7% increase in gun seizures, demonstrating proactive measures to remove firearms from circulation and enhance public safety. Additionally, ammunition seizures surged by 41%, indicating heightened vigilance in disrupting criminal networks.
In tandem with enforcement actions, arrests and charges for major crimes witnessed a commendable 9% increase, reflecting the JCF’s steadfast resolve to hold perpetrators accountable and ensure justice for victims.
Reaffirming the JCF’s dedication to fostering a safer Jamaica, Commissioner Blake emphasized the continued focus on key strategies, including gun control measures, community engagement initiatives, and proactive crime prevention efforts.
