Police Commissioner, Dr Kevin Blake, has encouraged members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) to actively participate in the organisation’s ongoing sports season, highlighting its importance in strengthening unity and supporting officer wellbeing.
In his latest weekly column, Dr Blake said that while the Force remains focused on reducing crime and violence, equal attention must be given to initiatives that build camaraderie and relieve the pressures associated with policing.
“As we continue to fight the good fight in reducing crime and violence in our country, we must never lose sight of the need for those social events that strengthen our bond and ease the stress that comes with the job,” he said.
The Commissioner noted that the demands of law enforcement require officers to operate in high-risk environments, often placing themselves “between these violent murderers and the people who we serve”.
He urged members to make time for the scheduled sporting activities across divisions, which form part of the lead-up to the JCF’s National Sports Day. “I hope each of you find the time to attend one of the several sports events… These events will continue until our National Sports on May 29 and 30,” Dr Blake stated.
He also expressed his intention to attend several of the events and extended best wishes to participants. “I pray for you the participants, that you may have an injury free season, and loads of fun in the process,” he added.
Dr Blake acknowledged the role of officers who remain on duty while others participate in the activities, expressing appreciation for their continued service. “For those of you who will continue to hold the line in our communities while your colleagues attend Sports, I truly thank you,” he said.
The annual JCF sports programme is seen as a key component of organisational life, promoting teamwork, resilience and overall wellbeing among members of the Force.
