OPERATION IRON SHIELD STRENGTHENS PUBLIC SAFETY IN POLICE AREA FOUR
The Area Four Police are reaping the rewards of more intensified and targeted operations under the Operation Iron Shield initiative, which has been underway since Sunday, June 14.
This robust operation spans all divisions within Area Four, which includes the St Andrew South, St Andrew Central, Kingston Western, Kingston Eastern, and Kingston Central Police Divisions.
Head of Area Four, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Michael Phipps, said the operation has strengthened the work of the men and women across the divisions.
“We are seeing some remarkable results. If you look at the operational outcomes from these operations, we see where Kingston Western, for instance, had a murder-free month,” said ACP Phipps during a recent episode of the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s (JCF) Force for Good Podcast.
Over the five weeks since its launch, Operation Iron Shield has been responsible for the seizure of 15 prohibited weapons and approximately 238 rounds of ammunition from the streets of Kingston and St Andrew. In addition, 21 wanted persons have been apprehended, while 45 stolen motor vehicles have been recovered by the police. The ongoing effort has also resulted in the arrest and charge of 253 perpetrators for various offences.
ACP Phipps explained that the Area Four policing landscape is highly dynamic and has, for years, been characterised by significant volatility. He said that recognising this, the Area Four command team increased and intensified its operational activities to bring the space under control and in line with the new approach to crime management in Jamaica.
In 2025, Area Four recorded 181 murders, a significant 47 per cent compared with the 342 recorded in 2024. This year, ACP Phipps is setting his sights even higher, as he and his team aim to end the year with fewer than 120 murders.
“We are seeing where we are at some 28 murders less than where we were last year, but the threshold target is to come in at less than 120 murders,” he explained. He further noted that he and his team recognised that a more intensified effort would be required to achieve their targets. As a result, Operation Iron Shield was launched.
As the initiative enters its sixth week, it is evident that the Area Four team not only has a clear strategy but also the resources to execute it effectively. Operation Iron Shield is proving to be a powerful crime-management initiative that is delivering measurable results.
